Diese Norm enthält Kurzbeschreibungen der Internationalen Rahmennormen zur Bestimmung der Emissions-Schalldruckpegel an Arbeitsplätzen und an anderen festgelegten Orten von allen Maschinen- und Gerätearten und gibt Hinweise zur Auswahl einer dieser Normen, die für eine bestimmte Art geeignet ist. Die Hinweise gelten nur für Luftschall und dienen zur Verwendung bei der Erstellung von maschinenspezifischen Geräuschmessnormen sowie zur Geräuschmessung, falls keine maschinenspezifische Norm existiert.
