Relates to the requirements and testing of laser equipment and installations all of which deal with the safety of the electrical part of such laser equipment and installations. The tests are intended to give assurance to the equipment user of protection from direct and indirect contacts, the effects of excessive temperatures (fire hazards), the effects of harmful radiation other than laser radiation, explosion and implosion, the effects of toxic or corrosive substances. Where a laser unit forms part of equipment which is subject to another IEC standard for electrical safety (e.g. for medical equipment, office machines, equipment for use in hazardous atmospheres), this standard will not apply to the complete equipment. However if the laser unit is operable when removed from equipment this standard will apply.
