The method is used for determining the residue on ignition produced by plastics, rubber and elastomers without pretreatment. The residue on ignition consists of inorganic substances. These substances generally do not occur in the residue on ignition in their original form, but instead may have undergone change under the heating conditions applied. If halogen compounds are present, the residue on ignition shall be determined according to DIN 53568 Part 2*). The test method is not applicable to silicones and polymers containing fluorine. For silicones DN 53587 shall be applied. For compounds containing fluorine there is at present no standardized method.
