Questa norma descrive il sistema e le specifiche delle apparecchiature delle reti FTTH/FTTB (fibra nell'appartamento/fibra nell'edificio), dove le informazioni sono trasmesse in ambedue le direzioni, diretta e di ritorno (dal generatore di servizi all'utente e viceversa), usando le tecnologie di multiplex di sottoportanti a radiofrequenza, e dove la direzione di ritorno utilizza un'addizionale tecnica di accesso multiplo a divisione di tempo, utilizzando il protocollo TDMA.
