Specifies requirements and test procedures for visible dye and fluorescent penetrant testing of non-porous products and components for the detection of discontinuities that are open to the surface. Process control procedures and requirements for standard test panels are specified in appendices.

This Standard specifies requirements for the penetrant testing of non-porous products and components for the detection of discontinuities that are open to the surface. It also specifies requirements for the materials used in penetrant testing, and requirements for process control. This Standard is intended for use in all situations where penetrant testing is used, including on-site testing and permanent factory installations.NOTES:1 Penetrant testing is usually applied to non-magnetic metallic materials but can be used on any material regardless of its physical properties, provided that its surface is non-absorbent and compatible with the process.2 Special requirements apply when penetrant-testing liquid oxygen system components.3 Advice and recommendations on information to be supplied by the purchaser at the time of enquiry and order are given in Appendix A.
