Tear growth tests serve to determine the resistance of a textile fabric to tear growth along cuts previously made in it for that purpose. The tear growth test specified is applicable to single-ply fabrics and to laminated or bonded multi-ply fabrics in which the tear propagates approximately parallel to the thread and in the same direction as the original cut, without cross threads being removed intact as a result. Coated fabrics are tested according to the method specified in DIN 53356.
