What is World Standards Day?
Every year on 14 October, World Standards Day celebrates the experts and collaborators who develop the millions of Standards we rely on every day. Standards touch almost every industry, underpinning safety, sustainability, quality and efficiency, enabling people, businesses and governments to innovate with confidence.
World Standards Day is organised by the world's three leading International Standards bodies, IEC, ISO, and ITU, who join forces each year to raise global awareness of Standards and recognise the work behind them.
What is the focus for 2026?
This year's theme is SDG 7: Affordable and Clean Energy, one of the foundational goals underpinning the UN's 2030 Agenda.
Reliable, sustainable energy is a critical enabler of progress across the board:
- Economic growth, powering the industries and infrastructure that drive productivity
- Healthcare, keeping hospitals, equipment and cold chains running reliably
- Education, enabling schools and digital learning tools to function
- Climate action, supporting the shift toward cleaner, lower-emission energy sources
- Digital transformation, underpinning the connectivity modern systems depend on
This makes SDG 7 central to progress across every other Sustainable Development Goal.
Affordable, clean energy is also a prerequisite for universal connectivity. Without reliable energy systems, digital infrastructure and communication networks cannot be deployed or sustained, particularly in underserved and remote communities. This connects SDG 7 directly to efforts to build inclusive, connected and resilient societies.
