This research effort consisted of performing a literature search and field testing four major reconnaissance methods. The report looks at direct chemical analysis, soil gas technology, and indirect geophysical technology to define hydrocarbon plumes and presents the results. The term "hydrocarbon" is used in this report to mean crude oil, petroleum distillates or products, natural gases, and condensate.
