About the National Standards Authority of Ireland

The National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) is committed to the consistent quality and safety of goods and services. The body ensures existing Standards are applied and works with relevant parties to develop new Irish Standards. 

The NSAI also represents Irish interests in the work of European and International Standards organisations, including ISO, IEC, CEN and CENELEC

The NSAI is Ireland’s official Standards body, operating under the National Standards Authority of Ireland Act (1996). It’s accountable to the Minister for Business, Employment and Retail at the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment. The NSAI’s goal is to increase consumer confidence. It does this by creating an infrastructure allowing products and services to be recognised and reliable across the world.

It boosts the performance of Irish business and protects consumers by setting appropriate standards, also issuing certifications which reflect the quality and safety of goods and services.

 

From business management systems to product approvals, NSAI works with a range of industries. This includes setting medical device Standards, along with safety and environmental Standards for the automotive industry. Through the National Metrology Laboratory, the NSAI maintains national reference standards for a range of measurement units, ensuring calibration services are suitable for international use.

The NSAI is an autonomous state agency. It has an executive management team under the authority of a chief executive officer. It is located in Dublin, Ireland.
