The object of the impact penetration test specified is to gauge the effects of impact stresses applied at right-angles to the surface of plastic films (afterwards referred to in brief as films). The test method can be used for rigid films with a thickness up to about 0.5 mm and for non-rigid films with a thickness up to about 1 mm (see Explanations) and enables a comparison of energy absorption properties, penetration force and deformability of the films. If necessary the test temperature can also be varied to determine the temperature at which transitions occur between the brittle and tough behaviour of the film under the test conditions.
