Preface This is the first edition of CSA/ANSI Z21.42 • CSA 2.15, Gas-fired domestic illuminating appliances. It supersedes the withdrawn standards CSA/ANSI Z21.42, with editions published in 2015, 2005, and 1993, and CSA 2.15, with editions published in 2016 and 1983. This Standard is considered suitable for use for conformity assessment within the stated scope of the Standard. This Standard was prepared by the Z21/CSA Joint Technical Subcommittee on Standards on Outdoor Cooking and Illuminating Appliances, under the jurisdiction of the Technical Committee on Bi-National Gas Appliances and Related Accessories and the Strategic Steering Committee on Standards for Gas Appliances and Related Accessories, and has been formally approved by the Z21/83 and CSA Technical Committees. This Standard has been developed in compliance with Standards Council of Canada requirements for National Standards of Canada. It has been published as a National Standard of Canada by CSA Group. This Standard has been approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) as an American National Standard. Scope 1.1 Applicable equipment This Standard applies to newly produced illuminating appliances constructed entirely of new and unused parts and materials for use with a) natural gas; b) liquefied petroleum gases; c) butane gas; and d) liquefied petroleum (LP) gas-air mixtures. The construction of illuminating appliances for use with these gases is covered in Clause 4. The performance of illuminating appliances for use with these gases is covered in Clause 5. 1.2 Applicable equipment for fixed gas piping systems This Standard covers gas-fired illuminating appliances for either outdoor or indoor installation, or both, and designed to be attached to fixed gas piping systems. 1.3 Non-applicable equipment This Standard is not intended to cover open flame-illuminating appliances with an input rating greater than 5000 BTU/h (1465 W) per burner. 1.4 Pressure references Throughout this Standard, gauge pressures are designated in pounds per square inch (psi) and kilopascals (kPa). The terminology \"psig\" is not used. Where \"psi\" is used, it is understood to be pound per square inch gauge. Absolute pressures are not used in this Standard. 1.5 Measurement units The values given in SI units are the units of record for the purposes of this Standard. The values given in parentheses are for information and comparison only. 1.6 Mandatory language In this Standard, \"shall\" is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the Standard; \"should\" is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; and \"may\" is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the Standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
