Guidance is given on the selection of suitable tolerances (extracted from BS 4500) for the bore diameters of shaft fitments (e.g. couplings, pulleys) to give interference, close and free fits when the fitments are used with cylindrical shaft ends to BS 4506.

This British Standard offers guidance in the selection of a suitable shaft fitment bore tolerance for use with the cylindrical standard metric shaft ends of6mm to 220 mm diameter specified in BS 4506.
Three classes of nominal fit, viz. interference, close, and free, are considered. Heavy interference, or “shrink??, fits where the design torque is transmitted by interfacial friction are not considered as these require detailed individual study.
