Specifies four main types of machine-made shellac based on different methods of manufacture. Each of the types is graded on the basis of colour. Requirements for scope and description, appearance and colour, colour index, wax, matter insoluble in hot alcohol, orpiment, rosin and the method for expressing the analytical results are given. In addition, optional requirements for different users for volatile matter, non-volatile matter soluble in cold alcohol, clarity of cold alcoholic solution (types III and IV only), ash, grit, flow, life under heat, water-soluble acidity or alkalinity, acid value, iodine value, arsenic, lead and adhesion to mica are also given. The relevant methods of test are given in the appendices.
