1.1This practice provides two NDT inspection levels, with acceptance criteria and applicable NDT method(s). It is not based on part driven engineering criteria but the practical inspection capability of properly applied NDT methods.2 Flaw detection is based on the flaw’s characteristic and relative orientation to the applied NDT method.

1.2Applicability—This standard applies to parts that are processed using laser beam powder bed fusion (PBF-LB). Post processing of PBF-LB parts by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) can close (partially or completely) certain types of defects. NDT techniques applied to HIP’ed parts may not detect collapsed defects. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to determine if this condition is rejectable and what NDT technique to use.

1.3There are areas in this practice that may require agreement between the cognizant engineering organization and the additive manufacturing supplier, or specific direction from the cognizant engineering organization.

1.4Units—The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound units are to be regarded separately as standard. The values stated in each system may not be exact equivalents; therefore, each system shall be used independently of the other. Combining values from the two systems may result in nonconformance with the standard.

1.5This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

1.6This international standard was developed in accordance with internationally recognized principles on standardization established in the Decision on Principles for the Development of International Standards, Guides and Recommendations issued by the World Trade Organization Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.
