Specifies dial gauges and dial test indicators used for linear measurement, reading to 0.01 mm and 0.002 mm, and gives requirements for materials, properties, basic design details, accuracy and finish. Appendices describe methods of test for the more important features of the instruments, and give notes on their care and use. Information is also given for calibration requirements for long travel dial gauges. For dial gauges, the Standard is in technical agreement with ISO/R463, but the accuracy and performance requirements have been amplified to show repeatability and discrimination as two separate metrological properties. For dial test indicators the technical requirements are in complete agreement with current ISO/TC3 work.

This standard applies to dial gauges and dial test indicators for linear measurement. It specifies requirements for the more important general dimensions, finish, accuracy, scale graduations, marking and packaging, together with certain design features necessary to ensure convenience in use and repeatability of readings. Notes on methods of testing the more important features of dial gauges and dial test indicators are given in Appendices A and B, and notes on the care and use of these instruments are given in Appendix C.
