Specifies a method for penetrant testing for detection of discontinuities, such as cracks, laps, folds, porosity and lack of fusion which are open to the surface of the material for testing. Applicable mainly to metallic materials but is also performed on other materials if they are inert to the test media, and are not excessively porous, eg castings, forgings, welds, ceramics, etc.
