When did it become a legal requirement?

The current version of the Standard, AS/NZS 3000:2018, was published on the 26th of June 2018, the sixth edition of the Standard originating from AS CC1-1931. Following its publication, the EL001 Wiring Rules Standards Committee granted electricians, builders, and other users of the previous version, AS/NZS 3000:2007, until January 1, 2019, to comply with the new edition of the Standard.

The latest ruling,
AS/NZS 3000:2018 Rul 1:2024, was published on the 24th of May 2024 and has been consolidated into the current AS/NZS 3000:2018 Standard.

AS 3000
Electrical Standards

AS NZS 3000 2018 (known as the Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules) specifies requirements for the design, construction and verification of electrical installations, including the selection and installation of electrical equipment forming part of such electrical installations.

AS 3000 is divided into eight comprehensive sections, each addressing different aspects of electrical installations. Section 1 outlines the Standard's scope, terms, definitions, and guidance on the design, selection, installation, inspection, and testing of electrical equipment to ensure compliance. Section 2 focuses on the general arrangement, control, and protection of electrical installations, detailing fault protection, overcurrent protection, and fire hazard prevention.

Sections 3 and 4 delve into the selection and installation of wiring systems and electrical equipment. They cover types of wiring systems, installation requirements, and specific equipment like motors and transformers. Section 5 discusses earthing arrangements and conductors, ensuring safe earthing system parts and equipotential bonding. Section 6 addresses damp situations, including installations in baths, showers, swimming pools, and refrigeration rooms. Sections 7 and 8 cover special electrical installations and verification, respectively, detailing safety services, hazardous areas, visual inspections, and testing procedures.
