Performance of Filtering Respirators

The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed the critical need for a domestic supply of filtering respirators that meet performance and quality requirements to protect all communities.

CSA Z94.4.1:2021, Performance of filtering respirators

The new National Standard of Canada, CSA Z94.4.1:2021, Performance of filtering respirators, helps address supply self-sufficiency to position communities better for the future.

CSA Z94.4.1:2021 provides common description, classification and performance requirements for particulate matter-filtering respirators and their components. The Standard aligns with the United States National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) requirements for filtering respirators. In addition, CSA Z94.4.1 focuses on some of the challenges identified during COVID-19, including fit testing, air flow resistance and breathability, fluid and flammability resistance and shelf life.

The Standard can be used by designers and manufacturers of respiratory protective devices, certification bodies and test laboratories. Government and regulatory agencies may also reference the Standard's requirements for mandatory compliance or regulatory administration in the development of respirator use guidance.

Standard Highlights

The first edition of CSA Z94.4.1:2021 includes:

  • general conditions for testing;
  • performance requirements for features that are common to all types of filtering respirators;
  • requirements for powered and non-powered airpurifying (negative pressure) respirators;
  • requirements for shelf life and cleaning methods;
  • requirements for respirators' marking;
  • requirements for information supplied by manufacturers; and
  • informative annexes with test methods references, a guide for selecting clauses for respirator conformance, comparison with US Code of Federal Regulations and more.
