Code of Federal Regulations

About the Code of Federal Regulations

The Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) is an annual edition of general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the departments and agencies of the US Federal Government.

The online CFR is a joint project. Authorised by the publisher, the National Archives and Records Administration’s (NARA) Office of the Federal Register (OFR), and the Government Publishing Office (GPO), the digital codification offers enhanced public access to important government information.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the most common questions about the Code of Federal Regulations.

The Code of Federal Regulations annual edition codifies the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by federal government departments and agencies. Containing titles from 1996 to the present, there are both paper bound and online versions. The CFR on the govinfo website is in line with the published print version.

The CFR divides information into 50 titles, representing the general areas subject to federal regulation. Each subject matter title has one or more individual volumes, updated once each calendar year, on a staggered basis. Each title is divided into chapters, with each chapter carrying the name of the issuing agency. Each chapter is then subdivided into more parts, covering specific regulatory areas. Most citations to the CFR refer to material at the section level.

When the print version is released, the online version also becomes available. If a CFR title or volume is not listed in the CFR browse, it has not yet been published. You can search the CFR online register by keyword, citation, title number or part number.

The Code of Federal Regulations is a US federal government initiative. It is administered by the US Government Publishing Office, headquartered in Washington DC.
