About the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials

The American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) is a non-profit, non-partisan association representing highway and transportation departments across 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. It covers all transportation modes including air, highways, rail, water, public transportation and active transportation.


This non-governmental US organisation plays a central role in the coordination and administration of voluntary standards nationwide. Founded in 1918, the goal of AASHTO is to enhance worker wellbeing and global business competitiveness through voluntary consensus standards and conformity assessment systems.

Under the guidance of a board of directors, the body comprises chief transportation officers drawn from 50 US states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico. The 12-member executive committee is led by AASHTO’s elected officers, supported by its executive director. All committee members are volunteers from the state department of transportation.
